After the PC, Dead or School has just landed on Switch and PS4, and we tried it on the Sony console. With a very "niche" design, typed manga but very specific even for its genre, is it worth it to be interested in his case? This is what we will see!

The kit or life!

Dead or School takes place in a futuristic dystopian universe in which bellicose mutants zombies of hell pushed the humans to live underground, in the corridors of the subway, confined, for more than 78 years! Born under the surface, our heroine is invested with a mission. A vocation, some would say: it wants all cavernous children in this world to have access to education! A mystical and educational quest that will lead her to explore the corridors and the surface of a devastated Tokyo, and highlight her warrior skills in the absence of polished pedagogy. She will discover our world, or rather its remains, in a fairly naive and candid way, which can tear away a few smiles, and give birth to many misunderstandings, often pretexts for the introduction of a light and frivolous scene. Beautiful from afar, far from being ugly

After the rather surprising discovery of the universe, eye contact with Dead or School will also be more than unusual. The narration is rather stylish, with some passages of slightly animated cartoons very classy, and visual novel panels which often benefit from the addition of video behind the sprites of the characters, which gives a certain dynamism to the thing, with the lack of voice most of the time. By cons, said videos are made with the game engine, but are served by a very, very low definition, worthy of a PSP or RCA connectors. In game, a few small drops of framerate are to be noted, despite the graphics that could turn on PS2, with summary sceneries in 3D in which 2D sprites of characters come to life, with sometimes offset camera movements. Also, the music is original, sticks well to the universe, but of very uneven quality and we sometimes plague in front of certain strident sounds recurring in combat.

Fan school

The parts drawn by hand, in play or in narration, are on the other hand very often of high class, even if they never manage to stand out from a certain small artisanal side. Some menus are also visually pretty crazy, with cinematic transitions for the simplest of them, and with all this mixture of hybrid narration that we find everywhere, Dead or School is adorned with a very special aspect, where we almost believe we are back on PC, 20 years back, at the time when we explored shareware and freeware floppies in search of games with visuals close to the spirit of what is offered to us here ! But after all, it's a very small Japanese studio that you find at the controls, and the Fan Game - dōjinshi, for purists - is never far away.

Draw me a mutant

The universe and design of Dead or School have something to divide. What will happen with the playability, also hybrid and Frankenstein-like? Let's kill the suspense right away, it's good, but not great. In combat, shooting is done in a Twin Stick Shooter fashion, with 3 types of weapons - explosive, ranged, melee - and we fight against hordes of zombies equipped with laser rifles, fire-breathing frogs and giant monsters straight out of an episode of DOOM. Due to its playability, the fights are rather soft, and the endurance gauge that limits our actions, very painful. But beyond an action game, you should especially see Dead or School as a Hack'n'Slash RPG, and on that side, we are a little better served even if it is very basic.

Melting potpourri

After thousands of loots, you can improve your stuff, benefit from bonuses and accessories, but also from a rather basic skill tree. If a fight is too hard, it will be enough to go to farm a little to overcome adversity. The exploration is quite nice, and takes up, to a lesser extent because of its independent levels, the mechanics of a good old Castlevania, where it is the last acquired treasure that will open a new path for the player. Here, everything is necessarily much more linear, with secrets moderately hidden, and indicated on the map for the most part. Some platform phases are also in the game, but they are a bit messy and have physics and weird hitboxes! You understood, just like its two-speed visuals, the playability of Dead or School also keeps a little amateurish side where we feel all the good will of the creators, but also a little of their frustration at the result!
